Raymond
Founder & Lead Hydroponics Specialist
I've been running Deep Water Culture (DWC) and Kratky hydroponic systems for over eight years. I started Sprout & Sow to share hands-on grow guides and troubleshooting techniques that actually work.
My Gardening Philosophy
I believe that gardening should be a science of observation rather than guesswork. When I first got into indoor growing in 2018, I made every rookie mistake: I suffered massive algae outbreaks, had root systems suffocate from stagnant water, and burned lettuce leaves to a crisp with high nutrient concentrations.
Those early failures forced me to measure, keep detailed logs, and study root zone physics. I realized that keeping parameters stable (like pH levels and reservoir temperatures) is far more important than buying expensive growth supplements. At Sprout & Sow, my goal is to break down these parameters into easy-to-follow guidelines, so you can avoid early system crashes and enjoy a perfect harvest.
Hands-on Experiments & Growth Records
Notable Failures & Lessons
- The Great Root Rot Crash (2019): Lost an entire crop of hydroponic tomatoes in July because reservoir temperatures rose to 78°F. Lesson: Keep reservoirs insulated, well-aerated, and maintain water temps under 72°F.
- Clear Reservoir Algae Storm: Used transparent storage totes for a passive Kratky herb setup. Within 3 weeks, algae choked out the root systems. Lesson: Light block is 100% mandatory; paint bins black or use thick, opaque buckets.
Yield Records
- Kratky Salad Greens: Averaging 15+ lbs of fresh butterhead lettuce and sweet basil annually from a single, low-cost $15 storage tote setup in the kitchen.
- Indoor Pineapple Fruit (2025): Successfully brought a grocery store pineapple crown to fruit in a 5-gallon DWC bucket at month 15 indoors under full-spectrum LEDs.
Active Experiments
Ethylene Gas Bloom Forcing
Testing the minimum exposure time required to trigger flower budding in mature pineapples using ripening apples in enclosed plastic canopies.
Concentrate Nutrient Comparison
Running side-by-side lettuce grows comparing standard 2-part liquid concentrates (pH Buffered) against dry 3-part formulas to track EC stability and mineral lockout.
