When something goes wrong in a hydroponic system, the symptoms are often the same, yellowing leaves, wilting, slow growth, but the causes can be completely different. The quickest path to a fix is learning to read the specific pattern of symptoms, because pH lockout looks a lot like a nutrient deficiency until you test the water. Here’s how to work through the most common problems systematically.

1. Nutrient Deficiencies in Hydroponics

Symptoms: Leaves turning yellow (especially lower or older leaves first), weak stems, poor growth or discolored spots on leaves. Interveinal chlorosis, yellowing between the veins while the veins stay green, usually points to an iron or magnesium deficiency specifically.

Solution:

  • Test pH before anything else. Nutrient availability depends almost entirely on pH. Most plants need a range of 5.5–6.5 and outside that window nutrients become chemically unavailable at the root regardless of what’s in your solution. A deficiency symptom that’s actually a pH problem won’t respond to adding more nutrients, it’ll get worse.
  • Check EC. If pH is in range, measure your electrical conductivity. A reading that’s dropped significantly since your last check means the plants have been drinking the nutrients without you replenishing them. Top up with fresh mixed solution, not just plain water.
  • Adjust nutrient concentration gradually. If EC is low, increase concentration by 10–15% and monitor for 48 hours before adjusting further. Sudden large increases cause more stress than the deficiency itself.

2. pH Imbalance

Symptoms: Nutrient deficiencies, stunted growth and poor plant health that don’t respond to adding nutrients. If you’re adjusting EC but nothing’s improving, pH drift is usually the culprit.

Solution:

  • Check pH daily. It drifts faster than most people expect, a warm reservoir in summer can shift half a point overnight. A brief daily test takes two minutes and catches problems before they compound.
  • Use pH Up/Down in small doses. Always add in small amounts (a few drops at a time), mix thoroughly and retest before adding more. Overshooting in either direction is easy.
  • Use a digital pH meter. pH strips are cheap but imprecise to within about 0.5, enough of a margin that you can miss the window entirely. 3. Root Rot: Causes and Fixes

Symptoms: Roots turn brown or slimy, there’s a foul smell from the reservoir and plants may wilt despite adequate water and nutrients. Healthy roots should be white or pale cream and firm. If you open the reservoir lid and it smells like a swamp, you have root rot.

Solution:

  • Increase oxygenation immediately. Root rot (pythium) is an anaerobic pathogen, it thrives in low-oxygen water.   • Drain, rinse and refill. Remove the plant, rinse affected roots gently under fresh water, then rinse with a very diluted 3% hydrogen peroxide solution (1–2 ml per litre is enough, more damages healthy root tissue). Sterilise the reservoir and refill with fresh nutrient solution.
  • Use beneficial microbes. Products containing Bacillus subtilis or Trichoderma can help outcompete pythium once you’ve cleaned the system. Add after the hydrogen peroxide has fully dissipated (24–48 hours), as H2O2 kills beneficial bacteria too.

4. Algae Growth

Symptoms: Green, slimy growth on the surface of the water, containers or growing medium, often accompanied by a musty odour. Algae competes with plants for oxygen and nutrients and a bad outbreak can significantly reduce dissolved oxygen in the reservoir.

Solution:

  • Block the light. Algae needs light to survive, eliminate its food source and it dies. Cover any exposed water surfaces with opaque material. Use black containers, wrap clear reservoirs in tape or fabric and run opaque tubing rather than clear. This is the only permanent fix; everything else is maintenance.
  • Clean regularly. Wipe down reservoir walls and container surfaces every two weeks even when algae isn’t visible. It spreads faster than it looks.
  • Lower water temperature. Algae grows faster in warm water. Keeping reservoir temperature at or below 68°F (20°C) slows algae growth considerably and also improves dissolved oxygen levels, two benefits from one habit.

5. Pests in the System

  • Inspect daily, early. Check leaf undersides every morning, that’s where mites, aphids and whiteflies congregate first. A minor infestation caught early takes five minutes to treat; a colony that’s been spreading for two weeks takes much longer.
  • Use insecticidal soap for minor infestations. It’s effective against soft-bodied insects and safe for most hydroponic crops. Apply in the evening to avoid leaf burn and focus on undersides.
  • Hang sticky traps at canopy height. Yellow traps catch fungus gnats and whiteflies; blue traps catch thrips. They also serve as an early warning system, a sudden spike in catches tells you something’s coming before the leaves show it.
  • Keep the grow space clean. Remove dead leaves and plant debris immediately. Pests breed in decomposing organic matter.

6. Slow or Stunted Growth

Symptoms: Plants aren’t growing as expected despite adequate light and nutrients. Growth is weak, small or simply stops progressing.

Solution:

  • Check temperature and humidity. Hydroponic plants generally thrive at 65–80°F (18–27°C) and 40–70% relative humidity. Outside those ranges, metabolic processes slow significantly even when everything else looks correct.
  • Verify your lighting. Duration and intensity both matter. Most crops need 12–16 hours of light daily for active growth; too little and photosynthesis can’t sustain the growth rate the nutrients are ready to support.
  • Review nutrient concentration. Both extremes stunt growth, too low and plants are malnourished; too high and osmotic stress prevents water uptake even though the reservoir is full. 7. Wilting or Drooping Leaves

Symptoms: Plants look wilted or drooping, often despite having adequate water, a sign of root stress rather than drought. Wilting with wet media almost always points to oxygen, temperature or root damage rather than underwatering.

Solution:

  • Check water temperature first. Warm water holds far less dissolved oxygen than cool water. Above 72°F (22°C), oxygen levels drop enough to cause root stress and wilting even with a running air pump. Aim for 65–68°F (18–20°C), a water chiller is worth considering in summer if your reservoir runs consistently warm.
  • Increase aeration. If your system lacks dissolved oxygen, add a stronger air stone or second air pump. This matters especially during hot weather when both water temperature rises and oxygen demand increases.
  • Rule out root problems. Wilting with moist growing media often means root damage, either from rot, salt accumulation or pH damage. Check roots visually and address the underlying cause rather than adding more water.
